Tango Class Information
In a beginner Tango class, expect to learn the Tango fundamentals that advanced technique is based on. Your first class will teach you to walk in partnership. Then, classes will advance to crosses, ochos, and basic musicality in a fun and supportive atmosphere. Our goal at The Tango Company is to prepare every student for Level I after one 3-Week Intensive.
You should take Private and Group Tango classes together for best results. Private Lessons will give you one-on-one attention, and you will dance with a professional Tango instructor. This will advance your knowledge and technique faster than any other method. Group Classes will teach you Tango technique and give you practice with different dancers at a slower pace. Either way is great, but both is better!
You should take the Absolute Beginner Intensive if you are new to Tango. For over 20 years, we have taught complete beginners with no dance experience and advanced Tango dancers with years of experience. Our Group Class Level format is as follows:
ABSOLUTE BEGINNER: Zero to little tango/dance experience
LEVEL I: An Introduction to TTC base technique. Prerequisite – Absolute Beginner class
LEVEL II: Application of all TTC base technique in a musical and practical manner. Prerequisite – All 6 Level I series
LEVEL III: Tango styles and figures beyond TTC base technique. Prerequisite – Strong knowledge of all Level I and Level II material with TTC Instructor recommendation
LEVEL IV: Advanced techniques and complex dynamics. Prerequisite – High level of Argentine Tango technique with TTC Instructor recommendation
LEVEL V: Professional level of Argentine Tango
Tango styles vary from school to school, teacher to teacher. It is our goal to keep all higher level classes moving at a smooth pace with all students familiar with The Tango Company’s base technique. Therefore, every student must take our Absolute Beginner Intensive before moving on to our higher level Intensives. It has been a policy that has brought great results and happy students!
3-Week Intensives are group Tango classes that are 90 minutes long and twice a week. This differs from the standard 1-hour, once-a-week classes most other schools offer. At The Tango Company, we feel the standard ‘one-hour a week’ group class is insufficient for effectively learning Tango. Full-immersion is the best way to learn Tango at any level.
Prices for The Tango Company’s Group and Private Classes are as follows:
Absolute Beginner Tango Intensive – Individuals $159 / Couples $299
Level I and II Intensives – Individuals $199 / Couples $379
Private Lessons with Carlos Cañedo – $179 an hour / $820 for 5-hour package
Private Lessons with Staff Instructor – $129 an hour
The Level I series are not given in the order of difficulty. Each series has its own technique independent of other Level I classes, so you can start taking the Level I Tango Intensives from any session. The only prerequisite is that you have taken the Absolute Beginner Tango Intensive at least once.
The Tango Company does not offer once-a-week Group Classes at this time. We do offer occasional workshops that are not in the 3-week structure.
You cannot get a refund or apply your tuition to any other class. Once you pay tuition for a Tango class your spot is reserved for that session only.

Beginner Questions about Tango
The Tango Company’s beginner Tango classes are held in Midtown Manhattan at Ripley Grier Studios. Ripley Grier Studios is at 520 8th Avenue, 16th floor, New York, NY 10018.

You should wear shoes with leather or suede soles. Rubber soles tend to stick on the hardwood, making it difficult to dance fluidly. For clothing, wear whatever makes you feel most comfortable and confident!
You should choose the role you want to learn Tango in regardless of gender. The ‘role’ of a dancer is either ‘Leader’ (traditionally male) who leads the movement of the couple or ’Follower’ (traditionally female) who follows the lead. We have absolutely no issues with anyone switching traditional roles. We simply ask you to choose your role when you pay for tuition and keep that role throughout the entire 3-week session. Anyone with issues dancing with someone of the same or opposite gender should probably choose a different dance school.
You can catch up with the class because The Tango Company reviews all previous material in every class. If you plan on missing more than two classes during a session, we usually suggest waiting for a future session that is better for your schedule or taking a Private Lesson to catch up.
You have to switch partners throughout a group class, even if you sign up as a couple. Part of learning to dance Argentine Tango is learning to dance with a variety of partners. For couples that only want to dance together, we recommend taking Private Lessons.
You should progress from Absolute Beginner to Level I after one 3-Week session. However, we do suggest remaining in a specific level until you feel comfortable with the Tango class curriculum. To reach the Level II classes, you must first take all 6 Level I series. Advancement recommendations will also come from TTC instructors.
You must dance with every student dancing in the opposite role. Anyone who refuses to will be removed from the class session and forfeit their tuition. Furthermore, any student who is found to be disrespectful to another student or instructor will suffer the same penalty. TTC prides itself on building a fun environment free of judgement and criticism, and we expect every student to take part in creating this environment. If you are having an issue with a fellow student, let your instructor know immediately.
You cannot get a refund or apply your tuition to any other class. Once you pay tuition for a Tango class your spot is reserved for that session only.
A ‘Practica’ is a Tango practice session. You can come and work on your technique before trying it at a more formal ‘milonga’ (Tango club). It is a supportive, stress-free environment with a TTC Instructor available to answer any questions. TTC offers a Monday evening Práctica for current Group Class students from 8:30-9:30pm.
